July 20th – July 22 some 5,000 participants will honor fallen Iraqi war hero, Lori Piestewa at the 2012 Lori Piestewa Games. Hosted by Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. Games will be played in Fort McDowell Indian Community, Salt River Indian Community and the Greater Fountain Hills area. Fountain Hills is proud to be part of this largest Native American sports festival in the United States. It is now in its 11th year.

The national sports festival will feature baseball, basketball, cross country, softball, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The Town of Fountain Hills and the Fountain Hills Unified School District share their park and school sports facilities that streamline the event.  Participants in the events will be representing 50 various tribal Sovereign Nations from across the United States and Canada.

This Native American sports event is in honor of Lori Piestewa. Lori was the first Native American woman to die in combat for the U.S. military. She died in 2003 while serving in the Iraq war.

The relationship of The town of Fountain Hills and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is truly unique. They are one of the only Indian community/municipal joint Visitors Bureaus in the country. This promises to be another great summer weekend in Fountain Hills.

For more information on sport event schedules and their various locations visit The Grand Canyon State Games website.
