Fountain Hills Red Shirt Fridays . . Our Small Town Is Making A Difference

filed under: Community Events, Living In Fountain Hills

Have you seen them, have you read about it, have you heard about it, how could you not. Yes there’s an invasion going on in Fountain Hills and they’re everywhere. Fridays . . . that’s when they come out. They’re in all shapes and sizes. I’ve seen them at my dentists office, I’ve seen them at the dog park, the grocery store, the car wash, the gym and tons of other places. Seriously they’re everywhere and I’m certain more will be coming .

Well surely by now you know I’m talking about all those “red shirts” we’re all wearing on Fridays. This is no small deal, as a matter of fact it’s a big deal and it started last November when Mayor Jay Schlum officially made a proclamation that every Friday until the troops come home from the war, will be ‘Red Shirt Friday’ in Fountain Hills, Arizona.

Red Shirt Friday is organized and funded by the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), American Legion and AMVETS Fountain Hills posts. John Pletz, Commander, VFW Post 7507 says “The mission of Red Shirt Friday is to show support for our servicemen and women. We are not a political organization. We do not care whether or not one supports or does not support the war. We care only about making our support of our servicemen and women known to our fellow Americans and the world. We need to let our servicemen and women know we support their sacrifice and we will not forget them, and we will do this by wearing “Our Red Shirt Friday” shirts on every Friday”.

Don’t have your shirt yet, want one, no problem. Here’s the link to get your Red Shirt. Order your red shirt. You’ll see that most of the styles are between $10 – $15. The shirts carry the message “Land Of The Free Because Of The Brave”. They come in many styles and sizes for men, women and kids. Ladies there’s even a summer tank or spaghetti strap style for the summer. As of today 4,454 shirts have been sold. As soon as 7,000 shirts are sold, there will be a major celebration at Fountain Park.

All of the profits from the sale of these shirts are going to benefit homeless Veterans. Why there are ANY homeless veterans I will never know, but the reality is that there are many. Red shirt Friday is not unique to Fountain Hills, there are many communities and organizations across the country that support this cause and have their own Red Shirt Fridays. Fountain Hills is one of many small towns that is making a difference for our Veterans, be proud that you live in a town that cares. . . I am.
